ChatGPT — July 9, 2026

Introduction of ChatGPT Work, a powerful new agent for tackling longer, more involved tasks, from research to creating finished documents, complete with scheduled task capabilities. A new unified desktop app for macOS and Windows, combining Chat, Work, and Codex, offers local file interaction, advanced development features, and an improved browser experience. Additionally, ChatGPT Sites in public beta provides transformation of ideas into interactive websites or apps, complemented by a new Plugin Directory and generally available Skills. Important updates include the deprecation of Atlas and the retirement of group chats, with clear transition guidance for a seamless move to these enhanced tools.

  • Beginning July 9, users on web, iOS, and Android will no longer be able to create new group chats, turn existing conversations into group chats, or join a group chat through an invite link.

Changed

  • ChatGPT Work is an agent for longer, more involved tasks. It can research and analyze information, work across connected apps and files, and create finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites. You can follow its progress, answer questions, change direction, and approve important actions as it works.
  • Work can also keep projects moving through Scheduled Tasks that run once, repeat on a schedule or trigger, or monitor for changes.
  • On web and mobile, Work is rolling out to paid plans except Free and Go. Pro, Pro Lite, Enterprise, and Edu users receive access first; Plus and Business users will follow over the coming days. Work is available in all supported regions.
  • On web and mobile, Enterprise and Edu workspaces have a two-week preview period. Work is off by default during the preview, and admins can opt out before it turns on automatically at the end of the preview.
  • We’re also replacing the App Directory with the Plugin Directory. Existing app connections are unaffected. Plugins can package skills, apps, and app templates for specific workflows, and are available from ChatGPT on web and desktop, including Work and Codex.

  • Enterprise and Edu users can find skills under Plugins in the sidebar, on the Skills tab in the Plugin Directory.
  • On desktop, Work can use local files and desktop apps with your permission. The built-in browser lets ChatGPT gather information from websites and work with supported web-based tools and files. Codex also adds inline editing within diffs, pull-request review in the side panel, faster computer use, and support for multiple repositories in one project.
  • ChatGPT Sites lets you turn your work or ideas into an interactive website or lightweight app without leaving ChatGPT. You can create dashboards, project trackers, launch calendars, prototypes, internal portals, and reports, then preview and refine the result with ChatGPT before sharing it.
  • Business and Enterprise customers already have access to Sites. Starting today, they can also publish Sites publicly and share them with anyone through a URL, expanding Sites beyond people in their workspace.
  • To create a Site, start in ChatGPT Work on the web or in Work or Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app. Describe what you want to build, add any relevant content, files, data, links, or constraints, and review the private preview before publishing.
  • In Enterprise workspaces, public publishing is off by default and must be enabled by an admin. Sites is also rolling out in public beta to Pro, Pro Lite, and Edu users, with Plus users following over the coming days. Sites is not available on Free or Go plans. Public publishing and the expanded beta rollout are not available in the EEA, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom at launch.

  • Retiring group chats in ChatGPT
  • Existing group chats will remain available and can continue to be used for now. When an existing group chat becomes read-only, users will retain access to the messages, files, and images already shared there. Individual ChatGPT conversations are unaffected.
  • Retiring Atlas
  • We’re deprecating Atlas as we bring browser-based agentic capabilities into ChatGPT and Codex. Atlas is scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026. We want to make this transition as easy as possible. Before then, move any Atlas data you want to keep. Atlas browser data, including bookmarks, open tabs, and browser history, will not transfer automatically. You can export your cookies and passwords to the ChatGPT desktop app and your bookmarks to Chrome. Be sure to save any important pages or URLs from your open tabs and browser history before August 9. Your ChatGPT conversation history is separate and will remain available in ChatGPT, subject to your plan, workspace settings, and account access. We’re building on what we learned from Atlas to bring a more capable browser experience to ChatGPT, including multiple tabs, downloads, improved navigation, and account login support where available. Fixed

  • If you already use the Codex app, update it as usual to move to the new ChatGPT desktop app. If you use the previous ChatGPT desktop app, follow the prompt in the app to download the new version. The previous app may remain installed as ChatGPT Classic. ChatGPT Classic continues to receive model updates, bug fixes, security patches, and support for its existing Enterprise capabilities, while new agent features such as Work and Codex are available in the new app.
