An AI IDE is a development environment designed around AI from the ground up, rather than bolting an assistant onto an existing editor. Cursor, a fork of VS Code, is the most prominent example, combining inline AI edits, tab completion, chat, and an agent in one tool.
AI IDEs sit at a different point on the spectrum from terminal-first agentic tools (like Claude Code): they keep you in a familiar graphical editor while adding AI throughout the interface.
